The Exchange welcomed participants to its one day seminar
'Inclusive Arts Practices: implications for Higher
Education learning and teaching.' The day was a great sucess and lots of ideas were
generated towards further implementation of inclusive practice. The day was documented and the
outcome will be put online in this website in the near future.

Lecturer in Composition Dr Oliver Searle, has been nominated for a prestigious Royal
Philharmonic Society Award in Learning and Participation category. This was for the work
Technophonia which he made in collaboration with Drake Music Scotland as part of the New Music
20x12 commisions. More information about the award

The Royal Conservatoire along with other members of CUK has been successful in winning funding
from the Arts and Humanities Research Council for a high profile project on the effects of music
making on the health and well being of musicians. This £750,000 project brings together the CUK
conservatoires with the Association of British Orchestras, the Musician's Union and BAPAM. Dr
Stephen Broad is co-investigator and will represent the Conservatoire on the project.

John De Simone, composer and member of the research staff here at the Conservatoire
received a performance of his large scale work “Panic Diary” performed by his group Ensemble Thing
at the international concert series “Handmade Homegrown” in Theater Dakota, The Hague, The
Netherlands. He shared the concert with world famous improviser Evan Parker. More info at this

receiving BBC Commissions for world premieres with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as part of
the barrier –breaking ‘Tectonics’ festival 2013, curated by world renowned conductor Ilan

The Exchange hosted a one of a kind festival celebrating the best of Brass Band research,
composition and practice in their inaugural Brass Day 2013. The event was a great success involving
3 Youth Brass bands, Conservatoire Brass 6 speakers and Masterclasses from our world renowned
international fellow, Ian Bousfield and Conservatoire Principal Professor John Wallace.

Congratulations to Stephen Robertson, Head Vocal Performance our Athenaeum Award winner for
2012- 2013. Stephen is investigating current professional practice in the male classical singing
voice feeding directly into pedagogical practice. His research will involve working closely with a
team of international professional singers to clarify with some objectivity how resonance and
registration functions in a range of different voices. Every year Athenaeum Awards offer staff a
3-month sabbatical to develop a research or knowledge exchange project.
