Study a postgraduate course in Scotland at the Royal Conservatoire
At the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland we offer a number of postgraduate Masters programmes
in Music and Drama. Our programmes include the internationally recognised
Masters in Opera as
well as exciting programmes such as the
MA in Classical and Contemporary Text for
actors and directors.
Our excellent RAE 2008 result showed that 85% of our research in music is of recognised
international quality. We are also leading the way in research into creative practice.
PhD and MPhil degrees undertaken at the Royal Conservatoire are validated and awarded by
the
University of St Andrews. Research
students enjoy access to the facilities of both distinguished institutions.
Focus on Dr Gareth Williams
Gareth Williams was attracted to the Royal Conservatoire’s thriving research programme
because he could pursue his artistic research, work with artists across a spectrum of disciplines
and take advantage of the Royal Conservatoire’s professional contacts. His PhD, completed in 2008,
gave him the creative space to explore and develop his unique compositional voice. The culmination
of his studies was
Love in the Blue Corner (2006), a fully staged chamber opera involving a full-sized boxing
ring. His career has flourished as a composer of operas -
The King’s Conjecture (2008, libretto Bernard McLaverty);
The Sloan’s Project (2011) - combined with a teaching post in composition and creative and
contextual studies at the Royal Conservatoire, inspiring the next generation of composers.
