Devising Musical Theatre

Youth Music Theatre UK

This intensive one-day course is designed for artists working professionally in the performance industry to explore different approaches to devising musical theatre.

By the end of the course you should have:

- Gained a deeper understanding of the key components of musical theatre performance

- Explored devising styles and techniques particularly suited to creating musical theatre

- Examined how creative ‘triggers’ can be used to develop material

- Looked at how material can be structured to create a finished musical theatre performance

This intensive one-day course will be lead by two of Youth Music Theatre UK’s most experienced practitioners – a director and music director – with expertise in devising and improvising new material.

This highly practical training will take place over a morning and afternoon session during which the tutors will introduce and apply devising techniques appropriate for musical theatre.

By using a mixture of tutor and participant-led work the course will utilise your own creative ideas. Various “ triggers” for creative work and stimuli that can be used to generate imaginative thinking will be explored and discussed.

The tutors will also provide a structured format for creating devised work leading to performance of professional high quality. By working as part of a team with sessions planned to incorporate the needs of everyone all participants’ interests will be addressed and explored.
