Judith Howarth



Judith Howarth studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama with Patricia McMahon, before joining The Royal Opera as a Principal at the age of twenty one. During nine seasons there roles included Oscar Un Ballo in Maschera, Iris Semele, Musetta La Bohème, Liù Turandot, Gilda Rigoletto, Morgana Alcina, Norina Don Pasquale Cressida Troilus and Cressida and Marguerite de Valois Les Huguenots. Amongst many career highlights at ROH, Judith also performed Elisir D’Amore along-side Luciano Pavarotti and the role of Adele in Die Fledermaus in a tribute to Joan Sutherland with Luciano Pavarotti, Marilyn Horne and Joan Sutherland.
 
Subsequent engagements include; Ellen Orford Peter Grimes (Toulouse; Santiago de Chile); Christine Intermezzo (Santa Fe), Nedda Pagliacci, four soprano roles Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Florida Grand Opera); Olga Fedora with Placido Domingo & Mirella Freni (Washington Grand Opera); Violetta La Traviata (Minnesota; ENO; Glyndebourne); Marzelline Fidelio, Liù Turandot (Staatsoper, Berlin); Marie La Fille du Régiment (Geneva), Cio Cio San Madama Butterfly (Minnesota); Elvira I Puritani, Madame Mao Nixon in China (Athens). For English National Opera; Leïla The Pearl Fishers, Fiorilla The Turk in Italy, Madame Mao Nixon in China, Gilda Rigoletto, title role in Anthony Minghella’s Madama Butterfly.
 On the Concert platform Judith has toured with Plàcido Domingo to Seattle, Australasia, Brussels & Amsterdam and starred with Jose Carreras at the Birmingham International Arena. She has performed Strauss Four Last Songs in Vienna with Sir Simon Rattle and performed world-wide with leading conductors including Solti, Sinopoli, Sir Charles Mckerras, Geoffrey Tate, John Elliot Gardner, Zubin Mehta, Haitink, Ozawa, Pretre & Sir Edward Downes to name but a few.
 
Recent engagements include Marguerite Faust (Minnesota Opera); Cio Cio San Madama Butterfly (English National Opera & Welsh National Opera); Donna Anna Don Giovanni (Amsterdam & Helsinki); Future Engagements include Cio Cio San Madama Butterfly (Finnish National Opera) title role Maria Stuarda (Minnesota Opera).
Judith has a discography of over thirty recordings including Cressida in Walton’s Troilus and Cressida which won the ‘Gramaphone’ Opera Recording of the Year and a new release of I Normanni A Parigi by Mercadante due out in November 2010. She also has many TV and video recordings including Der Schauspieldirektor from Buckingham Palace, Philidor’s Tom Jones from Drottningholm and various ROH Opera recordings.
