Study at a partner institution

Study Abroad

We encourage all students to spend time studying abroad if their Head of Department or Programme Leader is in agreement.

“It opened my eyes to a new way of living and attitude.  It changed my outlook on music and helped me to view it in a global, holistic context.  It gave me an opportunity to learn a new language, meet many different students from around the world and experience different ways of learning.  Living away from my home country has challenged me to be more open-minded, independent, tolerant and self-aware”

Robyn Stapleton, BA (Hons) Scottish Music (Erasmus exchange student at the University of Limerick 2011/12)

If you are interested in applying for an Erasmus or International Exchange, you might find the Erasmus+ Information Sheet for Students (outbound) 2014-15 a helpful place to start gathering information.  More detailed information on the application process is given below.

Erasmus exchanges

If you are interested in going on an Erasmus exchange to one of our European partners, you should first check with the International and Student Experience team (Sarah Ward and Heather Watt) via international@rcs.ac.uk  to see if there is an opportunity to do so in your subject area.  Alternatively, you can check the list of international partners.

If your chosen institution is one of our partners and is accepting Erasmus applications for the forthcoming academic year, please complete/collect the following documents:

  • Application form for outgoing Erasmus students (available in early 2015)
  • Learning Agreement for studies-full version
  • Copies of transcript of records from previous years’ study
  • CD or DVD documenting performances/work
  • Letter of motivation/CV
  • Reference

Students in the School of Music must make an appointment with their Head of Department to discuss and get approval to apply for Erasmus and to complete the Learning Agreement.  They should then make an appointment with the relevant member of staff below and take all paperwork for their signature:

  • For BEd (Hons) Music students: John Gormley
  • For BMus (Hons) students: Helen McVey
  • For Masters students in the School of Music: Simon Van der Walt
  • For BA (Hons) Scottish Music students: Josh Dickson

Students in the School of Drama, Dance Production and Screen should discuss their exchange with their Programme Leader, who should also assist in completing the Learning Agreement and providing signatures.

Once you and the relevant staff members have signed your application form and Learning Agreement, you should submit all documents to Heather Watt, Administrator (International and Student Experience) in person or via  international@rcs.ac.uk by 27th February in the academic year prior to the year in which you wish to study. Your application and documents will then be forwarded to your chosen institution(s) for their consideration.  You can apply to up to three partner institutions in any given application cycle.

The Royal Conservatoire International and Student Experience team will contact you with the outcome of your application and provide you with any relevant documentation as soon as possible. Our European partner institutions typically make their offers before the end of the academic year in June.  Please note that all applications and correspondence will be through the International and Student Experience team, therefore please check your email account regularly.

Please let the International and Student Experience team know immediately if any of your personal or contact details change.
