Below you’ll find details of what’s expected year by year in this programme. Common to all years are your Principal Study Lessons, Performance Classes, and Creative and Contextual Studies with the opportunity to undertake a second or related study and take part in Masterclasses and concerts.

Throughout the programme you may also be assessed on your attendance, application, attitude and ability in your practical studies, to include preparation for lessons, classes & rehearsals, punctuality, and performance skills.

Year 1

You’ll benefit from 90 minutes individual tuition each week, the opportunity to undertake a second or related study, and also classes in Creative and Contextual Studies.

Performance 1 (Technical Assessment):

You’ll be expected to play;

i) Scales and arpeggios: All chromatic and diatonic major and minor scales and arpeggios, dominant and diminished sevenths. Each scale or arpeggio should cover the full range of the instrument but will start and finish on the tonic note. A variety of rhythms and articulations may be required.

ii) A study of your own choice (to be approved by your Principal Study Tutor)

iii) Orchestral excerpts (6 prepared excerpts and sight-reading may be given)

Performance 2 (Non-public recital):

You’ll present a programme of varied repertoire, the overall duration to be 20 minutes. One piece is required to be played from memory.
Coursework:

Coursework will involve the continuous assessment of your practical work. In year one compulsory coursework components include Principal Study Lessons, Repertoire Orchestra, Orchestral Repertoire Classes, Performance Classes, First-Year Woodwind, Technique Classes, Reed Making (oboists and bassoonists), and Events and Concerts. Coursework components that are available include Second/Related Study Lessons, Symphony/Chamber/Opera Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Chamber Music, Ensembles, and Masterclasses.

Year 2

You’ll benefit from 90 minutes individual tuition each week, the opportunity to undertake a second or related study, and also classes in Creative and Contextual Studies.

Performance 1 (Technical Assessment):

You’ll be expected to play;

i) Scales and arpeggios: In addition to the requirements for year one, all whole tone scales should also be prepared.

ii) A study of your own choice (to be approved by your Principal StudyTutor)

iii) Orchestral excerpts (8 prepared excerpts and sight-reading may be given)

Performance 2 (Non-public recital):

You’ll present a programme of varied repertoire, the overall duration to be 25 minutes. One piece is required to be played from memory.

Coursework:

Coursework will involve the continuous assessment of your practical work. In year two compulsory coursework components include Principal Study Lessons, Orchestral Repertoire Classes, Performance Classes, Technique Classes, Reed Making (oboists and bassoonists), and Events and Concerts. Coursework components that are available include Second/Related Study Lessons, Symphony/Chamber/Opera Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Repertoire Orchestra, Chamber Music, Ensembles, and Masterclasses.

Year 3

You’ll benefit from 90 minutes individual tuition each week, the opportunity to undertake a second or related study, and also classes in Creative and Contextual Studies.

Performance 1 (Technical Assessment):

You’ll be expected to play;

i) Scales and arpeggios: In addition to the requirements for years one and two, all major scales should also be prepared in broken thirds.
ii) A study of your own choice (to be approved by your Principal Study Tutor)

iii) Orchestral excerpts (10 prepared excerpts and sight-reading may be given)

Performance 2 (Public Recital):

You’ll present a programme of varied repertoire, the overall duration to be 30 minutes.

Coursework:

Coursework will involve the continuous assessment of your practical work. In year three compulsory coursework components include Principal Study Lessons, Orchestral Repertoire Classes, Performance Classes, Technique Classes, Reed Making (oboists and bassoonists), and Events and Concerts. Coursework components that are available include Second/Related Study Lessons, Symphony/Chamber/Opera Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Chamber Music, Ensembles, and Masterclasses.

Year 4

You’ll benefit from 90 minutes individual tuition each week, the opportunity to undertake a second or related study, and also classes in Creative and Contextual Studies.

Performance 1 (Mock Audition):

The candidate will be expected to present one unaccompanied recital piece and twelve

prepared orchestral excerpts. Sight-reading may be given.

Performance 2 (Public recital):

You’ll present a programme of varied repertoire, the overall duration to be 35 minutes.

Additional Performance (if elected):

A suitable performance, approved by the Head of Woodwind, in one of the following areas:

Concerto performance, Orchestral performance, Chamber music performance (20 minutes’ duration), Early music performance (20 minutes’ duration), Studio recorded performance (20 minutes’ duration), Contemporary music performance (20 minutes’ duration)
