BA (Scottish Music) with Honours

The Scottish Music Department is fully tailored to Scottish Music specialists. We produce highly educated professional performers of traditional Scottish music; no other degree programme offers the same level of specialism.

We offer two undergraduate degrees for performers and composers of outstanding potential: BA (Scottish Music) and BA (Scottish Music – Piping).  Both degrees are for four years and are full-time. They are a careful yet dynamic mix of practical performance work, balanced with a strong academic element.  Graduates leave with an impressive knowledge of all the various Scottish music traditions.

Performance in a variety of contexts, including professional and community venues, and on tour, is a cornerstone of our programmes. We believe thorough preparation is just as important as performance itself, so we cover stagecraft, rehearsal management, and administration. If you are already a competent performer then you’ll find that your game will be raised several notches.

Our staff are professional performers, composers, and scholars of Scottish traditional music with active careers. They understand the challenges that you’ll face in your own career, and can provide help and advice as you progress. As well as working with our elite core staff, you’ll get the opportunity to learn from visiting artists and academics from all over the world.

There’s a great atmosphere in the department and the Conservatoire as a whole. It’s a close-knit community where you end up performing and gigging with other students and staff, and making friends for life. The Piping degree is delivered in partnership with the National Piping Centre, which is adjacent to the Conservatoire, and is the international centre of excellence for the Highland bagpipe. Both the Conservatoire and the National Piping Centre are dynamic environments for practice, training, and research, and we’re very close to some major Scottish Music archives.

Our students tell us that one of the best things about studying at the Conservatoire is the range of opportunities available and the contacts they make. You can expect exciting performing opportunities including tours around the United Kingdom, teaching placements in Europe, recording and production of albums, and appearances at high-profile events, including Glasgow’s internationally famous Celtic Connections festival, Piping Live! and international occasions of state.

Representives from the department will be attending Winter Storm in 2012.
