The Coat, written and directed by Ramesh Meyyappan, was inspired by Nikolai Gogol’s short story The Overcoat.
Amara lives alone in a rented room of a house. She is not alone by choice, despite her years she never met anyone to share her life, her quiet demeanour left her alone– no one noticed her, she is still barely noticed! Poverty has Amara trapped in her place. Her coat is just like her – the symbol of her life; it is worn out, it is tattered, it is sad!
A new coat for Amara is the symbol of a new beginning, a start to have recognition for being who she is, reinvigorate her drab existence and dare to dream of a better life. When the coat is taken from her, her dreams become her nightmares.
The coat is a visual theatre production incorporating illusions and movement with a little BSL dialogue.
