“You must forgive my Carmelites. It seems they can only sing tonal music,” commented Francis Poulenc about his opera concerning the historical fate of a convent of Carmelite nuns who in the closing days of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution were guillotined for refusing to renounce their vocation. The intricate story gradually unfolds and culminates in one of opera’s most devastating and dramatic final scenes, as the Carmelite nuns embrace martyrdom whilst singing a transcendent and heart-wrenching setting of Salve Regina.
Performed in French with English surtitles.
