• Can I apply for the Transitions Music programme?

To apply for the programme you must be aged 12 years or over. Whilst there are no specific entry requirements we will be looking for students who can demonstrate their experience, ability and potential, as well as the commitment and determination necessary to study at a high level.

All eligible applicants will be invited to attend an audition.

  • What to expect at the audition

Entry to the Transitions Music scheme is by audition and we look for musical potential and commitment. Ahead of the audition, applicants should prepare the following:

On your Principal Instrument:

  • two contrasting pieces

On your Second Instrument (if applicable):

  • one piece

You may also be asked:

  • to sight read a piece relevant to your standard
  • to perform scales and arpeggios or broken chords relevant to your standard

Aural Tests
You will also be given a selection of rhythm and pitch tests appropriate to the standard of your principal instrument.

We are very interested to hear about your musical interests and aspirations and to give you the opportunity to ask questions. There will be time for this towards the end of the audition.

An accompanist will be provided but you may bring your own accompanist if you wish (unfortunately there will be no rehearsal opportunity with the accompanist).

All candidates will be heard by the Head of the Junior Conservatoire of Music and by a specialist on your principal instrument.
