Congratulations to Jenn Butterworth, Traditional Music lecturer, for her double win at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards on Saturday (December 7).
Not only was the guitarist named Musician of the Year, her band Kinnaris Quintet took home the biggest award of the night, The Belhaven Bursary for Innovation in Scottish Music in association with Showcase Scotland Expo, which supports the winner to progress unique ideas and empower creation. The £25,000 award is financially matched only by the Mercury Prize.
Jenn said: “It’s such an honour to receive an award from the Scots Trad Music Awards, I’d like to thank the Conservatoire for being a constant source of inspiration and a really supportive place to work.”
Professor Josh Dickson, Head of Traditional Music, added: “This is a fantastic and well-deserved achievement for Jenn that reflects the enormous (and enormously positive) impact she has made on the Trad scene. Her passion for music, her gift for collaboration and her steadfast professionalism make her an inspiration to those around her and a joy to work with.”
Jenn is a highly recognised teacher with a wide range of teaching experience, including her role as Lecturer in Practical Studies in the Traditional Music department.
Based in Glasgow, she is at the heart of the vibrant Scottish folk scene, performing regularly with a variety of artists including her own projects which include Jenn Butterworth and Laura-Beth Salter, Kinnaris Quintet and experimental folk-jam group The Blas Collective.
