RAD Advanced 1 Ballet (Thursdays)

Weekly Classes for Young People

Introduction

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is one of the world’s most influential dance education and training organisations and is recognised internationally for the highest standards of learning and teaching. These classes are designed to motivate and encourage students of all ages and levels of ability through systematic measurement of progress and attainment.

The RAD Advanced 1 Ballet syllabus challenges and inspires students technically and creatively, encouraging critical thinking and physical fitness. During this course, students will develop their understanding of the vocabulary and technique of ballet.

Upon successful participation of the course, students can be entered for the Advanced 1 Examination. Successful candidates are eligible to become Affiliate Members of the Royal Academy of Dance.

Students will be taught in professional dance spaces, and when required accompanied by a pianist. Classes will focus on dance technique and performance skills, working towards optional examination and class awards.

These classes provide an opportunity to study ballet through recreational and vocational routes. They are suitable for students who want to develop their dance technique and skills further, or are new to dance and looking for a fun way to get fit.

Students who study the RAD syllabus will have:

  • Achievable goals to work towards
  • Recognition from the world’s largest ballet examination board
  • Qualifications that are fully accredited by the UK regulatory authorities
  • The impetus to achieve their personal best in a fun and nurturing environment

The course will be delivered by an RAD registered and qualified teacher.

Financial support



Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Lifelong Learning courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

Equivalent ballet qualifications from the following organisations are accepted:

  • British Ballet Organisation (BBO / bbodance)
  • British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA)
  • Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD)
  • International Dance Teachers’ Association (IDTA)

Where, exceptionally, candidates enter for an exam and the prerequisite in the same session, the award of the exam will be dependent on the prerequisite also being passed.

Preparing for your course

Students will be required to wear a set uniform for RAD classes. Uniform promotes safe dance practice and also follows the etiquette of ballet training.

Students should arrive for the class with the uniform appropriate to their grade or level. Female students should have their hair neatly tied back, in a bun or appropriate alternative. Jewellery must not be worn, unless for religious or cultural reasons.

Term 2: Sat 13 January – Fri 23 March 2018 (no lessons Sat 10 February – Fri 16 February)

Term 3: Sat 21 April – Fri 15 June (no holiday)
