Dance Technique (for ages 14 - 17)

Summer School for Young People

Introduction

This fun and energetic five-day dance summer schools allows young people aged 14 – 17 to experience a variety of dance genres and improve their overall technique.

Participants will be taught by professional teaching artists and will study non-syllabus technique classes in jazz, ballet, contemporary dance, musical theatre, commercial, street dance, dance theatre and choreography. You will also be taught short pieces of repertoire from West End productions, with opportunities to develop basic choreographic skills.

You will be expected to creatively engage with other students in the group and also complete some partner work and solo tasks.

By the end of this course participants will have:

  • improved their dance performance technique
  • experienced a professional approach to practice
  • increased their fitness, strength and stamina
  • gained a basic understanding of creative tools and choreographic devices

This summer course is aimed at young people who wish to improve their dance technique across a range of dance genres. The course is also suitable for those considering further dance training.

It will take place in one of our beautiful dance spaces at the Wallace Studios at Speirs Locks and will culminate in an informal sharing of the work created during the week for family and friends.

The deadline for booking this course is Friday 1 June 2018 at 12pm.

Financial support

Entry requirements

This course is open access for young people aged 14 – 17.

Whilst no formal qualifications are required, it is recommended that students have experience in dance technique classes (ballet, jazz or contemporary) to feel confident and fully benefit from the course.

Preparing for your course

No advance preparation is required for this course.

Participants should wear comfortable clothes suitable for dancing – for example leggings and a t-shirt or leotard for girls, shorts or light/loose trousers for boys. Jazz shoes should be worn and participants should be willing to work in bare feet for contemporary classes.

Students should bring water and healthy snacks as this course will be very physical.
