Weekend class for young people

Dance Theatre

This exciting dance course is suitable for anyone who has an interest in developing their skills in a wide range of dance styles, including street and hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, jazz and physical theatre.

The focus of the class will be in developing skills for performance in a range of contexts, and will include solos, duets and ensemble work.

Your will work with dance teachers to increase your confidence, imagination and choreography skills. You’ll learn about the process of creating new dance pieces and working together as a dance unit to explore imaginative and new ways of working together.

Each term your tutor will introduce a new theme or idea for your class to explore using research, practical activities, improvisation and performance.

You don’t need to have previous dance experience to join in – we welcome all young people and ask that you come to class ready to work hard, be challenged and have fun!

Financial support



Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Lifelong Learning courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

Bafta-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Lifelong Learning.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.

The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.

Drama at 60 Scholarship

The Drama at 60 Scholarship supports talented performers and producers of theatre, film and television gain essential skills and experience as they work towards formal training.

This scholarship offers up to three promising theatre or screen practitioners up to £1,000 to invest in a range of training activities at the Royal Conservatoire. The focus in 2016/17 will be on digital creativity as part of our New Digital Creatives scheme.

The deadline for applications for Drama at 60 Scholarships for 2017/18 is Tuesday 30 June 2017.

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this open access course. Children do not need to have any prior experience of dance, though an interest in dance styles would be beneficial.

Participants should come to the course expecting to attend regularly, work hard, be challenged and have lots of fun working with other young people of the same age.

Preparing for your course

No previous dance experience is required for these classes but enthusiasm, energy and an interest in trying new things is essential.

Students should dress in appropriate clothing and footwear for dance and be willing to work barefoot if required.

Students are encouraged to bring snacks and water with them.

We request that no valuable belongings are brought to the classes and mobile phones are switched off except during breaks.

We are now accepting bookings for terms 2 and 3 and you can pay in installments.

Term 2: 13 January – 24 March 2018 (excluding 10 February): 10 weeks, £169

Term 3: 21 April – 16 June 2018 (excluding 26 May): 8 weeks, £135
