ISTD Modern Grade 2

children weekly course

Introduction

This Grade 2 Modern class is perfect for 8+ year olds who are interested in developing their dance skills, getting fit, and meeting other young people.

The class is taught by an ISTD-registered dance teacher and students will learn movement skills, expression, creativity and musical awareness. Students also have the option to study for and be presented for ISTD examinations at the end of the academic year. Classes will focus on dance technique and performance skills, working towards optional examination and class awards.

These classes provide an opportunity to study modern dance through recreational and vocational routes. They are suitable for students who want to develop their dance technique and skills further, or are new to dance and looking for a fun way to get fit.

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) is one of the world’s leading dance examination boards. Modern Theatre Dance makes a distinctive contribution to the education of all students, through using movement, which is one of the fundamental modes of human expression. It offers a range of learning opportunities and enables participants to enjoy physical expression as well as develop intellectual sensibilities. As they work together in Modern Theatre Dance, candidates learn about co-operation and develop an understanding of the shaping of movement into artistic forms of expression. Candidates develop the skill and understanding of Modern Theatre Dance, at the same time as building a sound technique, by developing the physical ability to communicate through movement in an expressive and artistic way. A clearly defined structure allows learning to take place in the context of safe dance practice. The Graded Examinations build up progressively, ensuring that steps and skills learned at lower levels prepare for more complex movements as the candidate progresses.

The objectives of the Modern Theatre Dance graded examination syllabus are set out below:

• Teach correct posture
• Develop the range of movement within the students’ natural capabilities
• Build a sound technique Promote the understanding and use of dance terminology
• Gain a good sense of self-expression
• Encourage creative movement
• Promote self-confidence in the performance of a solo

The course will be delivered by an ISTD-registered teacher.
