Making a Short Film

This course is ideal for aspiring filmmakers who want to develop technical skills and get hands on experience working with cameras.

Throughout the course students will come up with an original idea and develop it into a finished short film. They will be guided through the process of filmmaking, from the conception of an idea, through the development stages, to a completed, edited short film.

Students will be introduced to camerawork, scriptwriting, editing and pre and post production planning. Participants from the Acting for Camera course will be the actors for the film shoot.

Taking inspiration from an iconic film that the class select, the students will develop an idea or story from the themes, issues and style of this selected film.

By the end of this course students should understand:

  • How to create and develop an original idea into a finished script
  • The role and use of production paper work, such as shot lists, storyboards and shooting schedules
  • How to work with actors to achieve strong performances
  • On-set roles and responsibilities
  • How to build and operate all the equipment on a film shoot
  • How to edit using Final Cut Pro 7

This course is an open access course for students who are interested in trying out and experimenting with the filmmaking process. Throughout the year the students will be introduced to the skills required in making a film, and learn about how to develop an idea.
