Modern Ballet - Mid Level (approx 13 - 14 years)

Summer School for Young People

Introduction

This five-day summer school is for young people aged 13–14 who are interested in developing skills in classical ballet technique, repertoire and contemporary dance.

The course is taught by staff who work on the RCS BA Modern Ballet progamme. Students will benefit from having the opportunity to creatively engage with the different styles taught by these specialists in the field of ballet and contemporary dance.

The course is practical, rigorous and aims to prepare young dancers working towards vocational dance training. Students will have daily classical technique classes with pointework for girls and virtuosity for boys. Additionally, students will participate in classes in a range of supporting subjects, including contemporary dance,classical repertoire, creative and conditioning.

By the end of the courses students should have:

  • strengthened their classical ballet technique
  • experienced a professional approach to practice
  • participated in repertoire, creative, conditioning and contemporary sessions

The summer school aims to create an inspiring, challenging and supporting environment for young dancers to develop their skills and talents.

The course will take place in our beautiful dance spaces at the Wallace Studios at Speirs Locks. It will culminate in an informal sharing of the work undertaken during the week for family and friends on Saturday 14th July in the morning. This will give you the opportunity to apply the skills developed throughout the week in a performance setting.

Please note, students should be working at approximately Intermediate Foundation/ Intermediate level in ballet to benefit fully from the course.

On the first day teaching staff will observe students as they participate in classes and stream them into groups appropriate to their level. The purpose of this is to ensure everyone gets the most out of the course and is taking part in activities suitable for their experience.

The deadline for booking this course is Friday 15th June 2018 at 12pm.

Financial support



Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Lifelong Learning courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

Staying in Glasgow

Many of our students travel from across the world to join us for an open day, study on a short course or attend a summer school at the Royal Conservatoire.

Residential accommodation for summer school students travelling within the UK or from overseas is available at Liberty House. This is the student accommodation that our full-time students use during term time. Please note that this accommodation is only for students aged 16+.

The modern, self-contained flats are located in the city centre of Glasgow, just ten minutes walk from the Royal Conservatoire. They consist of single en-suite units and have a communal kitchen that you can use to store and prepare food during your stay. You can find more information on their website.

For 2017 summer school students, the prices start at £139.50 for 7 nights (excluding bedding pack). Kitchen packs/items are included as standard for Summer School students. Bedding packs are not provided in the bedrooms, but can be purchased from Liberty House for £30 on application.

Places are strictly limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Preparing for your course

No advance preparation is required for this course.

Although students do not need to have any formal dance qualifications, previous dance experience is essential and students should be working at approximately Intermediate Foundation/ Intermediate level in ballet to benefit fully from the course.

Students should wear ballet practice clothes (leotard, ballet tights) for classical classes and footless tights for other classes. Soft pointe/ canvas shoes should be worn for class and girls should bring pointe shoes.

You should also bring water, a packed lunch and healthy snacks as this course will be very physical.

Teaching staff

Kerry Livingstone

Kerry trained at the RAD in London and graduated with a first class BA (Hons) in the Art and Teaching of Ballet and a Licentiate of the RAD.

Kerry joined the staff of Northern Ballet School in Manchester, where she worked for eight years, teaching full-time students on both the Professional Dancers’ and Teachers’ Courses. On moving back to Scotland, she joined the Dance School of Scotland, where she worked for five years.

In 2008, Kerry was appointed as the Head of the Associate Programme at Scottish Ballet. She is also the Head of Modern Ballet at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Kerry is a tutor for the RAD and has a Masters Degree in Ballet Studies from the University of Surrey, Roehampton.
