Dr Angela Jaap joins innovators in global fellowship

 

Charles Dickens, Marie Curie, David Attenborough and Stephen Hawking ”¦ Royal Conservatoire of Scotland lecturer Dr Angela Jaap joins illustrious company after being elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

Dr Jaap, who specialises in teacher education and professional learning at Scotland’s national conservatoire, is now part of a 30,000-strong global Fellowship that is committed to creating positive social change.

The RSA focuses on supporting innovation in creative learning and development, public services and communities, and economy, enterprise and manufacturing.

The Lecturer in Professional Learning, and a graduate of RCS’s Bachelor of Education Music (Hons) programme, said: “To be nominated and awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts in recognition of my work in education and teacher education is a real privilege.

“The RSA champions innovation to promote social change and this is even more essential with the ongoing pandemic. I believe that while there are obstacles and challenges, there are also lots of opportunities, which lend themselves to creativity and divergent thinking, particularly in education. As we continue to make sense of the ”˜new normal’, I am excited to champion creative arts education in my role as a Fellow.”

Since graduating from RCS in 2005, Dr Angela Jaap has taught across undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes at the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh.

She was a specialist education consultant at RCS from 2015-17 in the development of career-long professional learning opportunities for teachers. Prior to this, she also taught music in secondary schools across Glasgow.

Beyond her teaching responsibilities, Dr Jaap has published in peer-reviewed education and music education journals and presented at national and international conferences. Her research interests lie primarily within arts education, particularly in the areas of high ability studies, professional learning and enquiry for teachers, early career development and learning with technology.

She has a range of external commitments, including holding the office of Vice President of the Scottish Educational Research Association (SERA), a member of the Scottish Association of Music Educators (SAME) and a Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
