Mark Saunders was the Head of the MA Classical and Contemporary Text postgraduate degree, a ground-breaking, vocational programme of training for actors and directors. He retired in December 2017.
He trained at the celebrated Ecole Jacques Lecoq school in Paris, and following that he went on to direct/devise and perform in many original shows that toured the UK, Europe, the States, and in the Hong Kong. His physical, comic version of Wagner’s Ring went on to do four tours of Germany, and pick up best newcomer award at the Bonn Theatre festival. Alongside performances he gave workshops and master-classes based on the Lecoq pedagogy.
He began working at RCS as a Lecturer in Movement, and has directed many plays, including Greek tragedy, Shakespeare, Moliere, Feydeau, Chekhov, Ibsen, Brecht, and contemporary plays and devised productions.
He has also directed external professional productions, including the award-winning The Accidental Death of an Accordionist. He is passionate about the work of the emerging artists from RCS and has served as Chair on the boards of several new theatre companies.
