Countertenor Matthew Paine is currently studying at the Alexander Gibson Opera Studio under the tutelage of Iain Paton. He is a grateful recipient of a scholarship from the RCS Trust and the Crome Scholarship.
Before studying in Glasgow, Matthew graduated from the Royal Academy of Music where he studied with countertenors Michael Chance and Lawrence Zazzo. Matthew is also a former Emerging Artist at Longborough Festival where he performed as Ottone in their production of L’incoronazione di Poppea.
During his time at the RCS, Matthew has performed the roles of Boy/Angel (Written on Skin), Orfeo (Orfeo ed Euridice), Ottone (L’incoronazione di Poppea) and Filch (Die Dreigroschenoper). Recently, he has recorded new works with the Red Note Ensemble, collaborating with composers and musicians at the RCS as part of their contemporary music festival PLUG.
Matthew’s upcoming performances for 2021 include Refugee (Flight, Dove) at the RCS and Dardano (Amadigi di Gaula, Handel) as a cover with Garsington Opera.
