Counselling

Counselling

Sometimes you may feel you are struggling with an issue and it would help to talk it through with someone who is neutral; someone who is not a friend or a member of your family or connected with your academic course. Counselling is not giving you advice or telling you what you should do. It is a process whereby, through exploring the issues that are causing you anxiety and stress you can reach your own decisions on the way forward or find a way of coming to terms with what is happening in your life. Counsellors can help with a range of issues, including many which may be encountered by students.

  • Homesickness, loneliness, isolation
  • Sexual and cultural identity
  • Relationships
  • Self-confidence
  • Life changes
  • Bereavement and issues connected with loss
  • Depression, self-harm and suicidal feelings
  • Exam/study stress
  • Alcohol and drug use

The counsellor at RCS is Dr Jane Balmforth; Jane is an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and works under the BACP Code of Ethics.

How do students make an appointment?

Jane operates an open-door policy, so it is not always necessary to make an appointment. Jane’s office is on the ground floor near the lift (Room 1.21) and you are welcome to drop in if the door is open. Alternatively, you can phone on 0141 2708 282 to make an appointment or e-mail on j.balmforth@rcs.ac.uk to fix a time for an appointment.

Is there any written information available?

The green leaflet Counselling – how can it help me? is available from the leaflet stand by Jane’s office and in the Library. Other booklets available are:

  • How to cope with the stress of student life
  • How to cope with doubts about your sexual identity
  • How to improve your mental wellbeing
  • Understanding depression
  • Understanding anxiety
  • Understanding bereavement
  • Understanding the psychological effects of street drugs
