Live Music

Glasgow’s live music scene is legendary. Over 130 live music acts take place each week in Glasgow, with everything from contemporary to classical music gigs on your doorstep.

The city is also home to the national orchestras including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Opera and Scottish Ensemble – all of whom have partnerships with RCS to allow our students to work alongside our professional neighbours. Outside of London, Glasgow is the largest music economy in the UK.

From the world-famous King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut and the iconic Barrowlands Ballroom to the SSE Hydro (named as the fourth best entertainment venue in the world), Glasgow lives up to its reputation as Europe’s secret capital of music.

The official mantra of the city is ‘People Make Glasgow’. Visitors from across the world comment on the legendary friendliness of Glaswegians and we like to make tourists feel like they are part of the city. Glasgow is exceptionally student friendly and home to a substantial student population of 130,000. As a small conservatoire we care about each of our students. We want you to love learning in our environment and make connections and friendships you will have forever.

Money Matters

For students, Glasgow is an inexpensive city to live in. The average cost for student rent in Glasgow is £94.16 per week – well below the national average (Natwest Student Living Index 2016). Liberty House, the RCS student accommodation, is only a ten-minute walk away from RCS so transport costs are low. Students also receive a free ticket to every RCS show held in our venues – this means free access to hundreds of performances each year.

Glaswegians take their shopping seriously and the Glasgow ‘Style Mile’ is located around the corner from RCS. Always a popular pastime, shoppers can choose from high street favourites on the Style Mile, upmarket boutiques in the Merchant City or quirky, vintage stores in the West End.
