The New Athenaeum Theatre is our main performance theatre. It seats an audience of 344 people and has a stage the size of the London Palladium.

Throughout the year we stage a range of performances at ‘the Ath’, from our showcase dramatic productions (recently The Seagull, remounted with York Theatre Royal), high profile Operas (Albert Herring) and our annual festive pantomime. We also regularly host talks from our professional partners such as the National Theatre of Scotland, BBC Scotland, the Royal Shakespeare Company and more.

We recently fitted the Theatre with a state of the art Stage Technologies Automated flying system, meaning we became the first educational establishment in the UK to offer Stage Automation Training as part of our curriculum. Beside the theatre is the stage workshop with large set construction and set painting areas.

A trip to ‘the Ath’ is a regular experience for our students, whether they’re treading the boards on stage or working behind the scenes, managing all aspects of technical production. The name is a nod to our heritage, as we were known as the Glasgow Athenaeum in 1847 when we were based on nearby Buchanan Street and our inaugural chair was Charles Dickens.
