Performance at RCS

Performance is central to the RCS curriculum and each year we programme more than 600 performances and events held in our five professional performance venues and at external venues across the country.

With so many performances, there is ample opportunity for collaboration across the art forms. Some examples of collaboration that take place each year are given below to give you some insight into how our student body works together to create amazing performances.

Production programmes and the School of Drama

Every performance in the School of Drama is created jointly with the Production department. Production students help to realise the director’s vision for the performance, from designing the set and costume, to the sound and lighting design and to stage managing the crew and performances. Production students are an integral part of the performance process and work closely with actors and performers from across the School of Drama to create the best possible output.

Large-scale collaborative performances

Every two years, students from across the conservatoire collaborate with fellow students from Glasgow School of Art, the University of Glasgow and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to perform an interdisciplinary, devised performance piece. Previously these have included a celebration of Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary and a response piece to 1968 ‘Last Futures’, both of which were live streamed on the BBC.

Piano and Dance

Every year, our pianists and dancers come together to perform an evening of new music and new choreography in the Stevenson Hall. Student composers and choreographers work together on the performance and it is a highlight of the performance calendar.

Plug

The annual Plug Festival is an opportunity for composers and musicians to work together and premiere new work. Plug has premiered hundreds of new works here at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

On the Verge

On the Verge brings undergraduate and postgraduate students from the School of Drama together, alongside students from the Production programmes, to stage a small festival of big ideas. Held in an external venue, this festival gives you the time to create new work for a public audience.

Into the New

Into the New is a festival of contemporary performance based in Glasgow created by graduating artists from the BA (Hons) Contemporary Performance Practice programme.
