Dr Andy Dougan
In 2004, Andy joined the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (then the RSAMD) after a long career as an award-winning journalist and broadcaster. He is responsible for the Film Studies strand on the BA Filmmaking programme, which encompasses film history, film theory and critical thinking.
Dr Andy Dougan was born in Glasgow and educated at St Mungo’s Academy before continuing his studies at the University of Glasgow (BSc). He began his career as a journalist in 1975 and worked for the Glasgow Evening Times, The Herald, Film Review, BAFTA, and many other leading publications in the UK and internationally. He now has over 40 years of broadcast and print journalistic experience. Academically, he has a PhD from the University of Glasgow and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Andy was awarded his PhD in 2018 for his work on early film audiences in Glasgow. This remains an active area of interest as well as researching the work of Martin Scorsese.
Andy has written 12 books on film, sports, and history. These include acclaimed biographies of Richard Attenborough, Robin Williams, and Robert De Niro. He has also written The Sunday Times bestseller Dynamo, which is currently in development as a major motion picture. Andy continues to write and blog while teaching and remains active in the film industry as a BAFTA member.
He has consulted at the National Film and Television School, served on the committee of BAFTA Scotland, was a member of the National Committee for the Centenary of Cinema, a member of the London Critics Circle, and chaired the UK Guild of Regional Film Writers from 1990–94.
