Drama (Secondary 5-6)

Year-long Weekly Short Course for Children and Young People

Overview

This course is now closed for bookings. Please sign up for the waiting list and email shortcourses@rcs.ac.uk to enquire about spaces.

This in-person course is for young people in Secondary 5 – 6 who have an interest in developing core drama skills and increasing their confidence and ability.

Each term, your tutor will introduce a new theme or idea for your class to explore using research, practical drama activities, improvisation and performance.

You will learn about voice, movement and dance, storytelling, character development and staging. As well as exploring these performance skills you will also have the opportunity to try out writing and directing. We aim to introduce a variety of theatre genres and styles, widening your understanding of performance in both a classical and contemporary context.

An important element of the course is the development of your theatre making skills. Working individually, in pairs and in groups, you will be introduced to practical devising and composition exercises which allow you to create original work from a given stimulus. You will learn to make stylistic and staging choices to create powerful and entertaining performance pieces.

By the end of this course you will have:

  • Developed your vocal, physical and creative skills.
  • Gained experience of devising solo and group performances.
  • Explored how performance can be used to understand the world we live in.
  • Created a piece of original theatre and performed it to an invited audience.

Throughout the year you will have the opportunity to work towards a short performance for an invited audience of family and friends.

  • Public Sharing – 21 June 2025 (family and friends are invited to this performance)

We run a variety of different courses throughout the year, and update our programme regularly – you can find all courses by clicking here.

Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
