Short Study – Weekend Short Course

Overview

This short courses for people age 16+ introduces the crucial role of the Stage Manager and explores how it works with all departments to ensure the smooth running of a performance. You will discover what it means to be part of a stage management team in theatre and have the opportunity to try out some of the tasks and techniques required by this role.

By the end of the course you should understand how to:

  • Prop a show
  • Create a prompt book
  • Set up a props table
  • Understand stage management within the wider production context

You will learn about the different roles within a stage management team and how stage management sits within the wider context of technical theatre including the different types of companies/ productions that stage managers are employed in.

This two-day intensive, interactive, introduction to the roles and responsibilities of the stage management team is led by Susan May Hawley, Lecturer in Stage Management at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Course Information

This is an open access course and you do not need any previous experience to take part in this course. The course leader will ensure all of the exercises are adapted to your level of experience so you can get as much as possible out of the course.

Susan May Hawley is a Lecturer in Stage Management at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Susan May graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1990 and, before taking up the full-time position of Lecturer in Stage Management in 2011, enjoyed a long and varied career in theatre, musical theatre, event and site-specific work. More recently, she was head of stage management for Scottish Ballet.

As a practitioner, Susan May has staged world premieres and high profile galas, as well as having been a touring stage manager to all the major cities across the UK and Ireland, and has worked on small-scale touring and community theatre to all the smaller places in between!

She has also toured extensively across Europe, America and China and been a guest lecturer and workshop facilitator on many projects throughout her career.

Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.

The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.
