Musical Theatre: Professional Practice (16+)

Summer School for Adults

This 6-day Musical Theatre Intensive Summer School will allow students to experience the energy and pace of a professional rehearsal process. Over 6 days of workshops and rehearsals you will explore and perform a variety of company scenes.

Aimed at performers aged 16+ you will be expected to have previous experience in Musical Theatre performances, as this course will be challenging and inspiring!

The course is practical, rigorous and aims to challenge participants both technically and creatively. Participants will rehearse towards a sharing of work in one of the Conservatoire’s performance venues at the end of the week.

The process will be led by experienced, current industry professionals.

By the end of the course students will have:

  • Strengthened their acting, singing and dance skills throughout rehearsals and apply them in the performance
  • Worked collaboratively with a professional creative team including a Director, Musical Director and Choreographer
  • Presented a sharing in one of the Conservatoire’s performance spaces

Course Information

Application deadline Monday 1st July 2024

Entry for this course is by audition only, via video submissions. Deadline for application is the 1st of July, however applications will be approved as they are received – so we recommend applying as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Please see Entry Requirements tab for further information about the supporting materials which are required for application.

Payment of the balance of the tuition fee is payable once applicants have been notified that they have been successful in their application to the course and completed their booking.

This course is aimed at performers aged 16+ who have previous experience in Musical Theatre performances.

Applicants should prepare a video recording of themselves performing one monologue (no longer than 1 minute) and one song from any musical theatre repertoire (1-2 minutes in length – we recommend one verse and chorus) to upload when applying.

The tutors would like to emphasise the importance of sharing audition material which shows you at your very strongest.

If you have any problems attaching files please email –

Successful applicants will be invited to a groups zoom call to meet your tutors and the rest of your peers before the summer school.

This will be helpful for tutors to think about suitable repertoire ahead of meeting you all in person. Further preparation guidance will be given during this call.

The course runs Monday 22 July – Saturday 27 July, from 10am to 5pm.

There will be a sharing of the work on Saturday 27 July for invited family and friends. Performance times and how to obtain tickets will be confirmed nearer the time.

Further Information

We want to ensure as many children, young people and adult learners as possible can access the performing and production arts education that is offered through Short Courses at RCS. Financial support options available for Short Courses include:

Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.

The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.

You can find more information about these funds on our Financial Support page.
