James Steffan

MA Acting Classical and Contemporary Text
Class of 2026

About

James Stevens is an actor and writer from London, currently pursuing his Masters in Classical and Contemporary Text at the Conservatoire. He has performed professionally for the past 3 years, primarily working with the absurdist London-based theatre company, Curtain Twitchers – for whom he played principal roles in their most recent productions of new writing: ‘Cosmic Healing?’ and ‘My Neighbours Are Kind Of Weird?’.

James recently featured in character comedy ‘David’s One-Man Band (F*ck You, Steven)’, which was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe festival as part of Underbelly’s 2025 programme. He assumed multiple roles in the production, both onstage and offstage – also working as the stage technician for the piece.

For a number of years, James worked within the media industry, ghost-writing for national and international newspapers. In his own writing, James therefore seeks to use the simplistic storytelling methods of journalism to explore more complex themes of the human condition.

James holds a BA in French and Spanish from the University of Bristol, speaking French, Spanish and Catalan. Studying critical theory, film, art and translation, James enjoys drawing from different cultural contexts in both performance and writing, with great admiration for traditional French Clown.

Outside of his work, James is a classically-trained musician, highly skilled as a cellist and orchestral percussionist. Hailing from a family of professional singers, he enjoys singing jazz, folk and musical theatre. For many years, he has worked as DJ in some of the biggest clubs across the UK.

James is also a sportsman, medalling at the London Youth Games in gymnastics as a teenager. He also was the goalkeeper for University of Bristol’s 1st XI football team, and enjoyed rugby, tennis and martial arts throughout his childhood.
