Mark Hathaway
At RCS Mark teaches acting to opera students, and an elective called Introduction to Opera Directing, as well as directing main-stage productions and opera scenes.
Mark is a Lecturer in Vocal Performance at RCS. He teaches acting and has directed productions of Le nozze di Figaro, The Rape of Lucretia, Il ritorno d’Ulisse, L’incoronazione di Poppea, Dido and Aeneas, Les Mamelles de Tirésias and Eight Songs for a Mad King. Mark has directed many sets of Opera Scenes at RCS, as well as at the Guildhall School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio. Mark teaches a Masters elective at RCS called Introduction to Opera Directing.
For three years, Mark was a Staff Producer at Scottish Opera, where he was Assistant Director on all four operas in Wagner’s Ring Cycle directed by Tim Albery, as well as productions of Don Giovanni, La Traviata, Orfeo ed Euridice, Bluebeard’s Castle, Erwartung, Semele, Tamerlano, Fidelio, The Death of Klinghoffer, A Night at the Chinese Opera, and The Secret Marriage. For Scottish Opera Education, he directed two operas for children by Julian Evans: The Minotaur and The Mystic Maiden of Loch Katrine. Mark has directed and sung in Scottish Opera’s Memory Spinners project, created to help and empower those living with dementia and their carers.
