Philip White

Head of Opera

In the UK Philip has worked as a guest on the music staff of the Scottish Opera, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera and Longborough Opera and he is currently Head of Music for Grange Park Opera.

Philip has spent the greater part of his working life in the field of opera working as repetiteur and chorus master both in the UK and abroad. He was most recently Chorus Master at the Opera de Lyon in France working with Kazushi Ono and Daniele Rustioni. Before that, Philip was Chorus Master at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, the Opera de Nancy et de Lorraine and Associate Chorus Master for the Chorus of Radio France.

Having studied German and Music at the Universities of Leeds and Vienna he was awarded a scholarship to work as a repetiteur at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD) and subsequently joined the music staff of Scottish Opera. He joined the staff of Frankfurt Opera in 1994 and since then has also worked regularly as Assistant Chorus Master at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. Projects at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris and with Radio France led him to work with conductors such as Christoph von Dohnanyi, Kurt Masur, Riccardo Muti and Pierre Boulez, Myung-Whun Chung and John Nelson.

Recordings include work as Chorus Master on Messiaen’s La Transfiguration de Notre Seigner Jesus Christ, Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini, Honegger’s La Danse des Morts and Sting’s album Sacred Love. He has also worked as a guest chorus master with the Netherlands Radio Choir, the BBC Singers and the Danish Radio Choir.
