[one] of Scotland’s leading visual theatre makers,” Ruxandra Cantir is a Moldova-born, US-trained, Glasgow-based physical theatre maker, performer, and teacher. Ruxy holds an MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre from Dell’Arte International (California, USA), and her BA in Theatre Arts (with a minor in Latin American Studies) from Furman University.

Ruxy devises and performs original work for all ages ranging from spectacle-based outdoor theatre to intimate indoor work using Mask, Movement, Clown, Puppetry and Physical and Visual Theatre.

Most recently, Ruxy’s solo show for adults Pickled Republic, a cabaret show set in a pickle jar, was part of the Made in Scotland showcase at Edinburgh Fringe 2025 and the Summerhall Autopsy Award recipient, given to boundary pushing artists working in Scotland. Involving mask, puppetry and movement, the show sold out its entire fringe run and toured Scotland in 2023 to critical acclaim.

Ruxy often works with collaborator Sarah Rose Graber with whom she has a body of work, including Two in a Barrel – a clown and puppetry piece for young audiences which toured across Scotland in 2022 and 2023. The piece also made its American Premiere in 2024 in Chicago to sold out audiences and is set to tour schools in Scotland through the Theatre in Schools Scotland/National Theatre of Scotland Programme on its 10 year anniversary in 2026-2027. Unicorn Dance Party – another Cantir-Graber collaboration, regularly performs across Scotland and was the only Scottish representation at the World Clown Festival in Jiujiang, China in 2025.

Ruxy teaches Movement and Performance Making in the BA Performance Course at the Conservatoire and specialises in Devising, Mask, Character creation and performance, Movement practices, and Play/Le Jeu.

Ruxy is a member of Single End Collective, an artist-run space in Southside Studios, Glasgow, and is a board member for Articulation and Manipulate Arts.
