Steven Brett

Born in Australia in the last century, Steven studied dance in Townsville and Canberra before moving to Melbourne to study at Victorian College of Arts and then the Australian Ballet School. After a brief sojourn to study Environmental Science, he was offered a job in Europe to dance with Nederlands Dans Theatre II with Jiri Kylian. After two years, dancing pieces by the likes of Jiri Kylian, Hans van Manen and Nacho Duato, Steven moved to England to join Rambert Dance Company.

Under three esteemed artistic directors at Rambert – Richard Alston, Christopher Bruce and Mark Baldwin – Steven was incredibly privileged to have worked closely with inspirational creators such as Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, Twyla Tharp, Glen Tetley, Siobhan Davies, Karol Armitage, Lucinda Childs, Jeremey James, Wayne McGregor as well the directors as dancer, rehearsal director and associate artistic director.

In 2004, Steven moved to the British Council, working as a Programme Manager in the Performing Arts Department. Across a variety of continents, he worked closely with UK artists to establish creative links and performing opportunities for them internationally.

In 2009, working for Pacitti Company, he produced the London-wide SPILL Festival of Performance – consisting of over 100 shows in 22 different venues showcasing some of Europe’s finest performance artists.

From 2010, Steven was part of an extraordinary team that ran the tiny pub theatre / creative development space, the Nightingale Theatre in Brighton (where he lives). Predicated on the ethos that ‘Theatre Can Happen Anywhere’, the programming included building six replica Victorian bathing machines as performance spaces.

In 2014 he returned to the British Council to continue his work in international cultural relations.

Since 2022, Steven has been a freelance creative produced for Ebony Rose Dark, a consultant and more recently a fundraiser for FareShare Sussex & Surrey, a charity that takes food that would otherwise go to waste or is donated and redistributed it to charities and organisations that work closely with those in food poverty.

For the last nearly 20 years, Steven has restaged the wonderful works of Christopher Bruce in companies around the world. How lucky!
