Overview
Join us at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for an exceptional choral course led by the highly acclaimed choral conductor and soprano, Alison McNeill. This inspiring program is designed to enhance your vocal technique, elevate your musicianship, and provide a unique opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside fellow singers in an intensive three day course working with a fabulous team of professionals.
Under expert guidance, participants will enjoy a dynamic and rewarding experience, culminating in a short concert for friends and family that showcases your hard work and musical growth.
Whether you’re looking to refine your voice or immerse yourself in the joy of choral singing, this course is the perfect opportunity to develop your skills in a supportive and engaging environment.
Last summer we celebrated the work of Bob Chilcott on his 70th birthday year with his “Little Jazz Mass” which was performed with piano, bass and drum kit. Summer 2026 repertoire will be announced in due course.
This 3-day course is jam-packed with vocal warm-ups, sectional rehearsals, musicianship and vocal technique sessions, small group singing lessons and a performance for invited friends and family.

This choral course offers a unique and exciting opportunity for adult singers aged 18+, who don’t often have the opportunity to take part in high level summer courses. Designed specifically for adults of all abilities, it provides an inclusive and welcoming environment for singers to improve their vocal technique, musicianship, and performance skills. Under the expert guidance of high-quality staff, participants will experience a period of intense, focused learning in a supportive and encouraging environment.
The course takes place in the thriving city of Glasgow, Scotland, known for its vibrant arts scene and rich musical heritage. This offers an inspiring backdrop for an immersive, high-level choral experience, culminating in rehearsals and a final concert to showcase participants’ progress. This is a rare opportunity for adults to engage in top-tier choral singing while exploring one of the UK’s most dynamic cities.

Course Information
- All participants must be aged 18+.
- All participants are required to have choral/singing experience and a basic ability to read sheet music.
- When completing your booking form, please include your voice type (e.g. soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and experience.
This 3-day in-person course will allow students to get involved in the following activities:
- Vocal Warmups
- Check-in: Goals for the week and Reflection
- Sectional Rehearsals
- Musicianship Session
- Full Rehearsals
- Small Group Singing Lessons
- Performance
This course will culminate in a 30-minute performance for an invited audience in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on the final day of the course.
Further details will be confirmed nearer the time.
- Please bring a pencil, eraser, folder and notebook to keep notes for the duration.
- Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a reusable water bottle to keep hydrated throughout.
- We will be in touch ahead of the course to provide any necessary materials or additional preparation requirements.
Alison McNeill
Alison is a Scottish soprano, conductor, and fiddle player with a rich and diverse musical career. A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a Masters in Performance, Alison further honed her craft studying with the late Teresa Berganza in Spain.
Passionate about cross-disciplinary and immersive performances, she draws inspiration from world music and diverse cultures. In a busy and varied career she has performed as a soloist all over the UK, Denmark, Holland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Japan, Pakistan, Kenya, USA and Mexico.
For the past two years, Alison has been Head Judge at Qatar School Choir of the Year Competition in Doha. She looks forward to performances in India, New York, Denmark and Kenya this year.

Edward Cohen
In concert, Edward has performed under the baton of Ryan Bancroft, Pierre Boulez, Peter Eotvos, Neeme Jarvi, and Yan Pascal Tortelier, amongst others. His recent concerto appearances have featured works by Beethoven, de Falla, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, and Strauss.
As the pianist for the choruses of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Edward works closely with prominent conductors, including Sir Andrew Davis, Tan Dun, Kristjan Jarvi, Peter Oundjian, and Thomas Sondergard. Other renowned choirs he has collaborated with recently include the Edinburgh Festival Chorus with Martyn Brabbins, Gustavo Dudamel, and Daniel Harding, the National Youth Choir of Scotland with Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus with Richard Egarr and Emmanuel Krivine. Edward has also played for masterclasses given by Nicola Benedetti, Karen Cargill, Malcolm Martineau, Janos Starker, and David Watkin.

Aimee Toshney
Award-winning Scottish musician Aimee graduated from Glasgow University (MA 1st class Hons and MMus Musicology) and trained in performance at the Royal Northern College of Music (MMus with Distinction) and with English National Opera on the Opera Works programme.
A ‘sparkling’ and ‘vibrant’ soprano, singing career highlights include performing the songs of Robert Burns internationally and on Scottish national television, joining the RSNO Chorus as soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, performing the title role in Carmen for an open air audience of over a thousand at Chiswick House (West London), singing in recital at the Irish National Opera House, and performing as soprano soloist alongside Felicity Lott, Susan Bickley, and Roger Vignoles in Vaughan-Williams’s Serenade to Music.
As a choral director and coach she chorus mastered the Scottish première of Jonathan Dove’s Uprising in March 2025 and has worked with the RSNO Chorus Academy, the National Girls Choir of Scotland, NYCOS Angus, the RSNO Youth Chorus, and the choirs of British MENSA and the RCS Junior Conservatoire, among others.
As an educator and facilitator she has taught and presented for organisations including the RCS, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Scottish Association for Music Education, Fischy Music, NYCOS, Luminate, Jessie’s Fund, and the ISM Trust; awards for facilitation include the J M Barrie Action for Children’s Arts Member’s Award for Discovering Lieder with the Leeds Lieder festival and an Evening Times Community Champion award for projects within dementia care units.
Summer Accommodation
We are pleased to welcome students from across the world to our Summer Schools. Our course fees do not include accommodation or food, and these should be organised by the student. Our campus is located in Glasgow city centre, and you can find the addresses below.
We recommend Base Glasgow, as purpose-built accommodation for Conservatoire students, with Rehearsal Rooms, Practice spaces and Dance Studios. Base Glasgow is perfectly suited for our summer school students; both safe and secure, with 24/7 staff presence and only 3 mins walk from our main Renfrew Street building, keeping travel costs to a minimum.
Classic En-Suite rooms come with a 3/4 bed, en-suite bathroom, ample storage, mirror, study desk and chair. The shared area includes a spacious lounge and kitchen area.
Please note that Short Courses staff are not affiliated with BASE or on site outwith the summer school teaching hours, and therefore cannot take responsibility for students outside of these hours.

Alternatively, there are plenty of hotels, hostels, and b’n’b options available. We are located close to transport links should you wish to stay outside the city centre. If you are travelling to Glasgow for a course, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers course fees, travel, accommodation, and cancellations due to COVID-19 – as RCS will not refund in this circumstance. For students under 18 years old, we strongly advise travelling with a responsible adult should any emergency situations arise during class. Students are only monitored by staff during class times.

Agnes Allan Bursary
Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.
The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.
Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.
James McAvoy Drama Scholarships
BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.
James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.
