The stage is set for a new season of performance ... and a special anniversary

The stage is set for another new season of performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland this autumn – and it comes with a special anniversary.
This year marks seventy-five years since the founding of The College of Dramatic Art at the Scottish National Academy of Music, as RCS was then known, and in the coming months, we’ll celebrate the extraordinary talent we’ve trained over the years.
This season, two productions directed by alumni come to the New Athenaeum stage. Let the Right One In is an adaptation of the 2018 vampire film, directed by Finn den Hertog and featuring final-year BA Acting students.
Vengeance, murder, the worst pies in London and some cracking tunes combine when MA Musical Theatre alumnus Aaron Lee Lambert brings Sondheim’s classic musical, Sweeney Todd, to life in December.
And BA Acting students also tackle Lorca’s Blood Wedding in the Chandler theatre, one of the Spanish dramatist’s most riveting works.
Dr Marc Silberschatz, Director of Stage and Screen at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, said: “To mark this 75th anniversary, we’ll be celebrating the breadth, depth and richness of the work that Stage and Screen students and staff – past and present – have created.
“But reflecting on our community’s accomplishments serves as a reminder that RCS has always been forward-facing and it’s our current and future students whose vision, craft and imagination that will shape the arts of the future, across the globe.
“The next generation is here, and supporting these young artists has never been more vital.”
Music includes the return of Big Guitar Weekend in October with a host of events, workshops and performances for guitar fans.
Baldur Brönnimann conducts the RCS Symphony Orchestra in Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, the RCS Chamber Orchestra brings Mendelssohn’s overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream to magical life and Fridays at One this term includes the return of the SCO Winds and singers (and alumni) Ellie Beaton and Matthew McKinney as part of the line-up.
RCS is also partnering with Glasgow 850 for a series of events throughout the year that reflect on Glasgow’s history, cultural landscape and artistic future.
