Pam Dow was a much loved and highly respected member of the Junior Conservatoire Staff (1978-2020). As well as her remarkable career as a performer (Principal Percussionist with the RSNO, 1967-1999), she was also an outstanding educator whose skills as a teacher and mentor impacted the lives of countless young musicians, ranging in age from primary school children to postgraduate students.
Pam’s passion for enabling and developing young talent was unique. We are delighted that this new scholarship will enable us to continue and honour her legacy.
In these current times of severe economic hardship, the scholarship will support the recipient(s) to further their musical development by accessing the specialist teaching, training and performance opportunities that are afforded by a place at the Junior Conservatoire (Music).
This new scholarship, which will be awarded annually as part of the Junior Conservatoire bursary process, has been enabled by the generosity of the trustees of Pam’s estate.
“Pamella Dow was an inspiration to all – her commitment and zeal for her students remains uniquely legendary. Hundreds of young musicians benefited from her energetic devotion and this scholarship will celebrate that passion.
“Thanks to her generosity, we can now further Pam’s legacy and continue to feel such enormous gratitude for her huge contribution to music education.”
– Former student, Colin Currie
“Pam would always go that extra mile to help her pupils, often lending them material, sticks and even instruments.
“She was a force to be reckoned with, driven by her passion to help others achieve their goals, taking great pleasure seeing her pupils achieve success. Pam was also humorous and a great problem solver for many a student. Over the years she became a ‘Musical Mother’ to many, many of which are now working professionally still remembering and using the ‘tricks of the trade’ taught to the them by Pam.
“She began teaching in the senior department in 1967 which lead to her later starting in Juniors in 1978.
“She loved the ethos of the Junior Department, the buzz of the younger ones, she lived and breathed fun and joy to her pupils and achieved such fantastic results through caring and complete dedication.”
– Former student, Louise Paterson
