Helen McVey
Helen McVey currently holds the post of Director of Business Development at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She is a cellist, arts leader, lecturer and strategist, dedicated to enabling others to improve the cultural well-being of Scotland and beyond. Helen was awarded her MBA in 2011; she also gained an Advanced Diploma in European Management from the University of Aarhus, Denmark in the same year.
During the formative years of her professional career, Helen toured extensively as a performer, worked as a Creative Executive for Enterprise Music Scotland and taught a range of modules at the RCS including Effective Practice Techniques, Enterprise Skills, Arts Administration and Management and Music in Society. Helen has undertaken a broad range of community outreach activities including projects with Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and Children’s Classic Concerts. Helen was part of the inaugural teaching team at Big Noise Raploch, Sistema Scotland working alongside the practitioners to identify and deliver training for the staff working with the Raploch community.
Today, Helen is sought after in a range of professional contexts. She works internationally as a consultant for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. Notably, Helen is a MusiQuE reviewer (Singapore), International Expert Chair for NCEQE (Georgia), External Examiner (RWCMD) in addition to internal Quality Assurance activities at the RCS (PGDE panel chair; Programme design lead MA Creative Producing). Helen frequently gives guest lectures/talks for organisations such as Enterprise Music Scotland, Classical Music NEXT, the Association of European Conservatoires and the Association of British Orchestras. Helen facilitates Board Development (Children’s Classic Concerts) and is a Board Member herself for the Glasgow Jazz Festival. Helen continues to be a curious, engaged and energetic arts practitioner; a mum and a proud Scot!
