Jean Sangster

Head of Voice (SDDPF) and the Centre for Voice in Performance (CViP)

Jean teaches Voice across BA Acting, BA Musical Theatre, BA Contemporary Performance Practice, MA Musical Theatre and MA Classical and Contemporary Text Programmes, also contributing to productions, performances and collaborative work.

Jean is Head of Voice in the School of Drama, Dance Production and Film SDDPF, and Head of the Centre for Voice in Performance (CViP).

The core spoken voice practice of the Voice Department is Nadine George Voice Work® NGVW, and Jean is one of 20 Accredited NGVW Teachers worldwide.

Jean teaches Voice across BA Acting, BA Musical Theatre, BA Contemporary Performance Practice, MA Musical Theatre and MA Classical and Contemporary Text Programmes, also contributing to productions, performances and collaborative work.

A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland when it was the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Jean originally studied piano, singing and bassoon in the School of Music. She taught singing for Acting and Musical Theatre students for many years and holds certification in Estill Voice Training®.

Jean’s industry work is as a vocal coach and voice director, in both spoken and sung voice.  For the National Theatre of Scotland: Medea, The Enemy, The House of Bernarda Alba; Cyrano de Bergerac National Theatre of Scotland, Royal Lyceum Theatre, Citizens Theatre; The Steamie, The Bookies, Wings around Dundee, Oor Wullie, The Yellow on the Broom, Deathtrap Dundee Rep; Hindu Times Stellar Quines, Dundee Rep; Moonset, Little Red Riding Hood, The Choir, Hay Fever Citizens Theatre; Sunset Song, The Broons Selladoor Productions; Backbeat Act Productions; Heer Ranja, Fifty Shades of Black Ankur Productions; The Steamie Neil Laidlaw Productions.

Film work includes Beats Sixteen Films; MARCH Glasgow Women’s Library/RCS.

Performance work includes Antigone, Interrupted Scottish Dance Theatre; Lachez Tout! Red Note Ensemble; Hand me down Glas[s] Performance.

Jean is a performance coach for choirs/choruses and has worked for a range of clients, including Scottish Rugby and the Commonwealth Games Federation President.

Jean is an Artistic Associate in Voice at Dundee Rep, a Donald Dewar Arts Award Trustee and an advocate of Scots Language.
