Peter Dykes

Oboe Tutor

Peter Dykes, born in North Yorkshire, studied oboe under Stephane Rancourt and Stephen West at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating in 2000. During this time in Scotland, he made regular guest appearances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Peter was also a member of the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, touring extensively in Europe and America.

For three years he held the position of solo oboe in the Slovenia National Theatre Opera and Ballet Orchestra and also played with the Slovenia Radio Television Symphony Orchestra and Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2003, he was appointed to the position of Principal Oboe with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in New Zealand, where he was also an oboe professor at the University of Canterbury and the Pettman Junior Academy of Music.

In 2010 Peter moved to Wellington to take up the position of Associate Principal Oboe with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He was also a member of the Wellington contemporary music group Stroma, and an Artist Teacher at the New Zealand School of Music.

In July 2017 Peter was appointed Associate Principal Oboe with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, so he and his wife, Jill, moved back to Glasgow. He is also an oboe teacher at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and an Advisory Trustee for Vacation Chamber Orchestras, one of the UK’s foremost orchestras for developing young musicians.

Away from the oboe, Peter is a junior football coach, a supporter of the Wellington Phoenix and Partick Thistle football teams, a real ale fan, and a keen swimmer.
