Rebecca Gilliver

Cellist Rebecca Gilliver has a wide-ranging career that combines working as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player and teacher. She is principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra where she has been a member since 2002. She studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal Northern College of Music, where her teachers included William Pleeth, Melissa Phelps, Moray Welsh and Ralph Kirshbaum.

Early success in national and international competitions led to critically acclaimed debuts at the Wigmore Hall, London and Carnegie Weill Hall, New York.

She has played as a concerto soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Hallé and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, under the batons of Sir Mark Elder, Sir Antonio Pappano, Paarvo Jervi and François Xavier Roth. Rebecca plays as much chamber music as she can, and has been a long-standing participant at IMS Prussia Cove and guest with the Nash Ensemble.

Rebecca has held teaching positions at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Purcell School and Junior Royal Academy and is a regular teaching guest at several courses, including the Deeside Cello Project and Alpine Kammermusik. She also runs her own course, the Dorset Cello Classes. She has given masterclasses at the
Music Academy of the West, the Julliard School, the RNCM and the Royal Academy of Music amongst others.

Rebecca is also involved with musical outreach, both at the LSO Discovery Department and in her local area, where she runs a small music initiative, Worlds End Music, which brings local professional musicians together with their community.
