Rogelio Nevares
Rogelio ‘Roger’ Nevares is an actor, acting coach and teacher, as well as a film and theatre director. He trained in Moscow, Russia, at the ‘Sergei A Gerasimov’ University of Cinematography (VGIK) in an MFA Acting course and an Acting Pedagogy post-graduate course.
Throughout a career of twenty years in the UK, he has worked as an acting teacher and stage director in leading UK performing arts institutions, such as the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Bournemouth Arts University. His acting school directing credits include ‘Cider House Rules’, ‘A Prayer for Owen Meany’ and ‘Napoli Milionaria’ at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire; ‘Great Expectations’ at the Arts University Bournemouth; ‘The Scarlet Letter’ at Kogan Academy of Dramatic Arts; he has also directed school musical productions and showcases in theatres such as the London Criterion and Bradford Alhambra.
His professional stage directing credits include: ‘Crimes of the Heart’, ‘No Exit’ and ‘Colonel Chabert’ at the Etcetera Theatre, London; Gogol’s ‘The Gamblers’ and ‘The Carriage’ at the Birmingham Crescent and stream.theatre, respectively.
Roger is also experienced in the creation and running of acting courses at HE and other levels, as well as in academic quality assurance and Higher Education accreditation for performing arts schools. He has been the Principal of Kogan Academy of Dramatic Arts, Kingston University London, and Vice Principal and Head of Acting at SLP College Leeds. He is currently a Lecturer, acting/directing, MA/MFA Classical and Contemporary Text course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
As a film actor, he recently appeared in Michael Bay’s newest film for Netflix ‘Six Underground’, in ‘North vs South’ and in the Ron Howard film ‘Rush’; he was Padre Galvan in the Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated Mexican film ‘The Crime of Padre Amaro’. TV Credits include ‘Doctors’, playing Raoul Gomez in the Emmy-winning British hit Sky/Cinemax TV series ‘Strike Back’ and a clueless interpreter in the TV Film ‘Lawless’ directed by Jon Jones (Mr Selfridges). Jones later directed him in a 3-part costume drama ‘The Great Fire’.
In his home country of Mexico, besides acting and directing professionally, he was an Associate Professor of acting at its national university (UNAM) and at the National Theatre Arts School (ENAT). He also taught as well as directed in the private acting school that he founded and ran together with former VGIK Russian teachers and graduates: ‘La Escuela Rusa de Actuacion en Mexico’.
His first full-length film as director is ‘Crossing that Bridge’ (2015), where he also plays Dr Roche, has received several independent film awards including the ‘Federico Fellini Award’ for Best Film at the Amarcord Chicago Arthouse Film Festival. He has been recently commissioned to write and direct two film projects based on works by Herman Melville and J. B. Priestley.
