Filmmaking (Secondary 1-6)

Year-long Weekly Short Course for Children and Young People

Overview

This weekly in-person course is for young people in Secondary 1 – 6 who have an interest in all aspects of the filmmaking process, and are keen to develop their skills, knowledge and learn more about making films.

You will work with experienced filmmaking tutors to learn how to take an idea from an outline all the way to a finished film.

Students will have access to professional cameras and filmmaking equipment and through a series of practical exercises and tasks will be able to develop their skills and confidence in all aspects of the filmmaking process.  Students will also look at some of the key pre-production processes to aid their filmmaking, such as mood boards, shot list and storyboard.

Students will have the opportunity to devise, plan, shoot and edit their own short films over their time on the course. In term one students will work on short sketch scenes to allow them to begin filming and gaining on set experience as early as possible. They will also develop an idea for a short film, a number of which will be commissioned and shot over terms two and three.

Students will work as small production units to create, shoot and edit the films made. This should allow the student to try out a variety of different roles within a film crew across the films that are made.

This is an introductory course which will benefit students with little or no practical filmmaking experience. It may also be suitable for students keen to develop and improve particular skills or create material for portfolios and show reels.

By the end of this course you will have:

  • Gained an understanding of the pre-production process
  • Learned about onset roles and responsibilities
  • Worked as a film crew on a number of shoots
  • Worked with a variety of styles and genres of filmmaking
  • Created a short portfolio of filmed work
  • Learned to build and operate all the equipment on a film shoot
  • Learned how to edit a film

Throughout the year you will have opportunities to work towards a short sharing for an invited audience of family and friends.

  • Public Sharings – 21 June 2025 (family and friends are invited to this performance)

We run a variety of different courses throughout the year, and update our programme regularly – you can find all courses by clicking here.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
