Filmmaking 2 (Secondary 4-6)

Year-long Weekly Short Course for Children and Young People

Overview

This year long course is for young leaners (S4 – S6) who are keen to develop their filmmaking skills.  This course is a development of Filmmaking S1-6 and on this course students will work with more advanced equipment and create longer form films.

A smaller class size will allow for a more focused and specific course, with students developing their established skills in cinematography, editing, writing and production. All students will develop and write an idea for a short film, of which a number will be shot as end of term productions. During the filming process, students will be assigned a specific role on the various productions. The students will then go through the post production process to edit their finished film.

The completed films will be shown as part of an end of year festival.

Term One will focus on core skills, along with dedicated screenwriting classes to develop scripts.

Term Two students will be allocated to a specific film, and given specific roles on each film shoot

Term Three will focus on the post production process with students all working together to complete an edited version of their film. During this term some smaller scale projects may be taken on.

By the end of the course you will have:

  • Create a short film working as a professional crew
  • Worked in a number of specific crew roles, with set responsibilities
  • Worked with more advanced equipment
  • Developed core skills across all the facets of the filmmaking process

To get the most from the course students should have studied on Filmmaking S1-6 and/or have prior filmmaking experience. The two courses can be taken in tandem on a Saturday, and this would give learners a rich and full portfolio of work come the end of the academic year.

  • Public Sharings – 21 June 2025 (family and friends are invited to this performance)

We run a variety of different courses throughout the year, and update our programme regularly – you can find all courses by clicking here.

Further Information

We want to ensure as many children, young people and adult learners as possible can access the performing and production arts education that is offered through Short Courses at RCS. Financial support options available for Short Courses include:

Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.

The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.
