Overview
This is a four-day foundational course for performers, directors, educators, creatives and aspiring/emerging intimacy coordinators who want to build safer, clearer, and more ethical practices around staged intimacy.
Introduction to Intimacy Coordination and Direction is designed to introduce the principles, responsibilities, and tools of intimacy professionals working in theatre, film and television.
This course explores how intimacy coordinators and directors support performers and creative teams in staging intimate content with consent, clarity, professionalism, and artistic integrity. Students will gain a strong conceptual foundation, practical frameworks, and communication strategies that can be applied across rehearsal rooms, classrooms, and production environments.
No prior experience in intimacy work is required.
By the end of this course, you will:
- Understand the role and scope of intimacy coordination and direction
- Explain why consent-based practices are essential in performance environments
- Identify professional boundaries, responsibilities, and ethical standards
- Use foundational tools for communication, negotiation, and documentation
- Recognise best practices for rehearsals, auditions, and closed-set protocols
- Support storytelling while prioritizing safety, agency, and respect.
Participants will leave with:
- A clear understanding of what intimacy professionals do
- Greater confidence navigating intimate material
- Practical frameworks for safer rehearsal and performance spaces
- Increased awareness of performer advocacy and consent practices
- A strong foundation for further training or professional pathways in intimacy work.
RCS will be launching an Intimacy Coordination/Direction Accredited Training Programme in Spring 2026. Those wishing to undertake this training opportunity will be required to undertake the Introduction to Intimacy Coordination and Direction course.
NB This course does not constitute intimacy coordination or direction training; rather, it is designed to enhance your own best practice.

Course Information
This course is suitable for directors, producers, actors and movement practitioners who wish to learn more about how intimacy coordination works. Previous experience working within a rehearsal or production context is required.
Students will be expected to contribute to discussions, share their thoughts/ideas, and approach the work from an open-minded and respectful position.
This is no specific course preparation required for this online course. We ask that students are eager to learn, and keen to foster a respectful learning environment.

Agnes Allan Bursary
Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.
The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.
Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.
James McAvoy Drama Scholarships
BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.
James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.
