Introduction to Voice Over (16+)

10-week Short Course

Overview

This 10 week,  introductory voice-over course is designed to help young people aged 16+ explore the world of voice acting while learning essential audio techniques and skills. Students will immerse themselves in a range of genres, gaining hands-on experience in areas such as commercials, games, animation, narrative, and radio drama, all while discovering the nuances of performing across different audio formats.

The course will guide students through the art of voice acting, covering topics such as creating character, adapting voice for various contexts and using microphone techniques to enhance performances. Students will practice a variety of vocal techniques, voice character development, improvisation, and sound effect creation with a focus on bringing scripts and characters to life through audio alone.

Along the way, students will also get an insight to the voice-over industry, from understanding how casting works to learning about voice reels and the process of collaborating with directors and clients. With plenty of interactive exercises, feedback sessions, and real-world examples, students will leave with a solid foundation of skills and a better understanding of what is expected of a voice over actor.

By the end of the course, students should understand:

  • Students will develop a foundational understanding of Voice Acting, focusing on essential vocal skills such as pitch, tone, and emotional expression and will understand how to utilise their own voice effectively for recording.
  • Students will develop an understanding of various voice-over genres, this can include but is not limited to commercial, animation, narrative or radio drama and will learn how to adapt their voice to suit the specific requirements of each genre.
  • Students will gain a secure understanding of how to properly prepare their voice for recording, including vocal warm-ups, microphone techniques, and other essential practices to ensure high-quality performances.
  • Students will learn how to effectively receive feedback on their performances and apply this feedback to continuously improve their voice-over technique and skill set.

This ten-week course may be useful for those who wish to enhance their existing skills, pursue a pathway to further training or explore a career in the field of voice over work.
