Making Music: Film 1 (16+)

10-week Short Course

Overview

Unlock the power of music to shape emotion, build worlds and drive narrative in the first of our Making Music series with this dynamic ten-week course. Through guided projects, industry insights, and creative challenges, you’ll learn to write music that transforms and elevates the visual. No matter your experience level, if you’re ready to bring stories to life through sound, this course is your launchpad.

Each weekly class will run from 6:30pm – 9pm, consisting of two parts: a fascinating, in-depth discussion of each aspect of the scoring world and a freeform practical session where you will be supported to write your own music, with one-to-one guidance and advice from a professional composer. You’ll work with industry-standard software and hardware to create music that transcends the notes on the screen, hearing it come alive as you create it.

By the end of the course, students will have learned:

  • How to use a variety of methods to spark creative melodic ideas
  • To begin responding musically to film and TV footage
  • Broad concepts behind musical arrangement and orchestration within the soundtrack genre
  • How to use software tools to craft a complete piece of film or TV music
