Overview
This course takes place on MS Teams and students must have their own access to an Apple/Mac device that is compatible with Logic Pro and MS Teams to be able to take part in this course. Please see entry requirements for more details.
Discover the power of professional music production with Logic Pro, Apple’s industry-standard digital audio workstation. Over ten weeks, you’ll master the fundamentals of recording, editing and producing music using one of the most powerful and accessible tools available to modern musicians, all from the comfort of your own home. From your first steps in the software to creating polished, professional-sounding productions, this course will build your confidence and technical skills in a supportive, hands-on environment. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to formalise your approach to digital music-making, this course provides the foundation you need to bring your musical ideas to life.
Each weekly session runs online on MS Teams from 6:30pm – 8:30pm, combining two essential elements: comprehensive demonstrations of Logic Pro’s features and capabilities, followed by guided practical sessions where you’ll apply these techniques to your own creative projects. Throughout the course you will receive personalised feedback from an experienced professional, you’ll develop both technical proficiency and creative confidence. By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to navigate Logic Pro fluently and produce professional-quality recordings from your own musical ideas.
By the end of the course, students will have learned:
- How to navigate Logic Pro’s interface and understand its core workflow principles
- Recording techniques for both audio and MIDI across a variety of instruments and sources
- Essential editing tools for timing correction, pitch adjustment and creative manipulation
- Mixing fundamentals including EQ, compression and effects processing
- How to arrange and structure complete songs using Logic Pro’s built-in instruments and samples

No experience is necessary for this course. However, students must have their own access to an Apple device that is compatible with Logic Pro and MS Teams to be able to take part in this course. RCS Short Courses are unable to provide equipment for this online course.
Please note that the course fee does not cover a subscription to Logic Pro. It is the responsibility of the student to have access to the software for the duration of the course, which can be a free trial or full access to the software, and must be in place before the course start date to benefit from the sessions.
Students must be comfortable navigating Mac/Apple software to fully participate in these sessions. We recommend students familiarise themselves with the software and their Apple devices prior to the course starting, as there is limited technical support available during the live sessions.

Further course details will be sent approximately 2 weeks before the course start date.
DAW experience is not necessary for this course and it will prepare students for entry to a Level 1 Making Music composition course. Students should be keen to learn and plan to attend all classes.

David Simpson
David R Simpson is a composer, creative technician and educator from Glasgow, Scotland. With a background spanning a wide range of genre and experience, his work combines innovative subtlety with the immediacy of pop sensibility.
With over 25 years of experience as a composer, David’s work has featured on Netflix, Amazon Prime, the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky as well as CBS, NBC and ABC in the US and numerous other international networks. Most recently his music was featured on Tom Basden’s
award-winning sitcom, ‘Here We Go’, for BBC One.
Other commissions include music for the BAFTA-nominated ‘Dennis The Menace & Gnasher’ (CBBC), Justin Long’s ‘The Real Stephen Blatt’
(Amazon), Pulcinella-nominated animation series, ‘Wendy’ (ZDF) and BAFTA winner, ‘The Walking Wounded’ (BBC Two).
In addition to his composition work, David has had considerable involvement in the spheres of live and recorded music, having worked with CHVRCHES, Lauren Mayberry, First Aid Kit, Zara Larsson, Hayley Williams (Paramore), Matt Berninger (The National), Marshmello and Karine Polwart as a performing musician, musical director, sound engineer and technician.
As an educator, he particularly enjoys bringing a hands-on approach to participants’ projects, fostering an atmosphere of welcoming discussion and openness. Previously, David has taught at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the University of the West of Scotland, the University of Strathclyde, the Edinburgh College of Art and for leading software developer, Ableton.
This course will run in-person on Thursday evenings for 10-weeks from 22 January – 26 March 2026, 6:30pm – 8:30pm.
The course fee is £210 which is the equivalent to £21 per session, and can be paid in full or in instalments before the course end date.

Agnes Allan Bursary
Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.
The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.
Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.
James McAvoy Drama Scholarships
BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.
James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.
