Musical Theatre: Live Production (ages 14-18)

Legally Blonde

Summer School for Children and Young People

Overview

Bend and snap your way to the stage this summer!

Omigod you guys! Short Courses is doing Legally Blonde!

Bend and snap your way into the world of professional theatre with Musical Theatre Live Production: Legally Blonde — a two-week intensive for ages 14–18 designed to give young performers a full-scale production experience.

From the first rehearsal to opening night, participants will work with industry professionals to explore every aspect of mounting a musical. With its witty script, infectious songs, and larger-than-life characters, Legally Blonde offers the perfect vehicle for aspiring performers to challenge themselves, build technique, and shine on stage.

Across the fortnight, students will engage in rigorous training in acting, singing, and dance while developing the discipline and collaborative spirit essential to ensemble work. Under the guidance of directors, choreographers, and musical directors, participants will refine their craft, gaining insight into the process of shaping a production from page to stage. This immersive program is about more than learning routines—it’s about understanding character, deepening performance skills, and experiencing the demands and rewards of live theatre.

The experience culminates in a fully staged performance of Legally Blonde before an invited audience, complete with professional-standard production values. For students considering further training in Musical Theatre, this program offers not only an unforgettable performance opportunity but also a taste of the intensity, creativity, and camaraderie that define the rehearsal room. By the final curtain call, participants will leave with stronger skills, greater confidence, and the exhilaration of bringing a full musical to life.

This fast-paced summer school is for young people with previous performance experience. Over the 11 days students will work collaboratively on all the elements central to the creation of a musical theatre production.

The course is practical, rigorous and aims to challenge participants both technically and creatively. Participants will experience a professional rehearsal process which works towards a performance in one of the Conservatoire’s performance venues.

Please note that although we aim to schedule the sharing times during the course hours, on some occasions they may be go beyond the course end times. All final sharing times will be confirmed at least 2 weeks before the course start date.

By the end of the course students will have:

  • Strengthened their acting, singing and dance skills through rehearsal and into performance
  • Experienced a professional casting process
  • Collaborated with technical and production students and staff through a fully-integrated technical process
  • Worked collaboratively with a professional creative team including a Director, a Musical Director and Choreographer

Course Information

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however we would highly recommend that students have previous musical theatre experience.

Students should come to the course expecting to work hard, be challenged and enjoy working in a professional environment.

In preparation for your young person joining Musical Theatre: Live Production this Summer, the course leaders have asked that students prepare 2 videos listed below. As well as giving the team an insight into the different abilities of the course, this will assist with the casting process for the production.

To maximise the exploration and rehearsal time during the course, please send a video of the below:

  1. Any song from the Broadway or West End soundtrack version of  Legally Blonde. It doesn’t need to be the full song, just enough to show your range and vocal ability.
  2. A short monologue in your an American accent.
  3. Please state whether you would prefer to be considered as a vocal part, an acting part, or if you would like to be considered for a specific role, or if you are happy with either.

Please send as 2 separate videos with a maximum of 2 minutes per video. Please title the recordings as ‘Student Name, Monologue or Song Title – MT: Live’ and email to summerschools@rcs.ac.uk before 1 July.

In the email, please include in the subject line ‘MT: Live – Student’s Name’ and in the body of the email, please include whether they’d prefer to be considered more as a vocal part, an acting part or a specific character. We recommend using WeTransfer to send the videos, or you can upload them to YouTube and send a link via email.

If your young person would prefer to not submit footage and be considered mostly for ensemble parts, please do let us know.

Students should wear comfortable clothing and footwear, suitable for movement and dance work. Please also bring water and snacks for throughout the day as this course will be very physical.

Further Information

We want to ensure as many children, young people and adult learners as possible can access the performing and production arts education that is offered through Short Courses at RCS. Financial support options available for Short Courses include:

Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in dance, drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.

The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.

You can find more information about these funds on our Financial Support page.

We run various promotional offers for our Short Courses and Summer Schools. You can view our current offers on our Promotional Offers page.
