Musical Theatre (Primary 5-7)

Year-long Weekly Short Course for Children and Young People

Overview

Musical Theatre (Primary 5–7) is an exciting and welcoming class where young people can explore the world of performing arts in a fun, supportive environment. It’s a space where creativity is encouraged, friendships are formed, and every student is given the confidence to try something new.

Throughout the course, students will work with a wide range of songs, from much-loved Musical Theatre favourites to modern pop hits. They’ll discover how singing, dancing, and acting come together to tell exciting stories and create memorable performances.

From the very start of the year, classes focus on building strong foundations in musical skills such as rhythm, pitch, and musicality. These are developed through engaging games, group activities, and hands-on learning that make every session enjoyable and accessible. With guidance from a Director and Musical director, students will learn fun and dynamic songs while growing in confidence through movement and dance.

As well as developing performance skills, the course supports personal and social growth. Students are encouraged to share their ideas, express themselves, and work collaboratively with others. Regular discussion and gentle feedback are an important part of the experience, helping students reflect on what they’ve learned and celebrate their progress in a positive way.

Above all, we want every young person to feel comfortable, included, and inspired each week—excited to take part, be themselves, and enjoy the creative process.

By the end of the third term, students will have the opportunity to share their work in a short, informal performance for an invited audience of family and friends—a chance to celebrate everything they’ve learned in a relaxed and supportive setting.

We run a variety of different courses throughout the year, and update our programme regularly – you can find all courses by clicking here.

Agnes Allan Bursary

Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.

The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in drama, music, production or screen.

Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.

James McAvoy Drama Scholarships

BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.

James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
