Overview
This in-person Musical Theatre Skills course for young people in Secondary 1–3 gives students the opportunity to combine acting, singing and dancing to create engaging musical theatre performances. The course focuses on building a repertoire of songs and choreography from a range of contrasting musical theatre productions while developing confidence in making creative and stylistic choices.
The course also focuses on developing the vocal and movement skills required of musical theatre performers. Each week, students will take part in vocal and physical exercises designed to strengthen technique, improve stage presence and help them connect with characters through song.
There will also be opportunities to create original Musical Theatre material. Through devising and choreographic exercises, students will develop confidence in generating ideas and shaping scripts, songs and routines.
Towards the end of the course, students will work together as a company to rehearse a Musical Theatre performance. Guided by an experienced Director, they will develop a deeper understanding of the material while building a supportive and focused ensemble.
By the end of the course, students will have:
- Explored a range of popular and musical theatre repertoire
- Developed their vocal, physical and performance technique
- Practised creative approaches to interpreting musical theatre material
- Worked collaboratively as part of an ensemble to create a musical theatre performance
Students will also have the opportunity to work towards a short performance for an invited audience of family and friends at the end of the third term.
This class pairs perfectly with Musical Theatre: Performance (Secondary 1-3), where students expand their skills by focusing on a different musical production each term.

Course Information
There are no entry requirements for this open access course. Students do not need to have previous experience. Students should show up to class eager to learn and take part.

- Dress comfortably in clothes which are suitable for the activity you are taking part in.
- Bring a notepad and pen/pencil in case you wish to make notes.
- Please bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated during your class.
- Classes will have a short break throughout, please bring a small snack.
- Due to allergies throughout our courses, we ask that students not to bring any nut products for break time.
- Any mobile phones must be kept in bags and on silent during class time.
The course fees for the full year (34 weeks) are £881 which can be paid in full or instalments throughout the year.
The termly fee breakdown for this course is:
- Term 1 (14 weeks) = £363
- Term 2 (11 weeks) = £285
- Term 3 (9 weeks) = £233
This course runs every Saturday. Please view the term dates below:
- Term 1: 5 September – 12 December 2026 (excluding 10 October)
- Term 2: 9 January – 27 March 2027 (excluding 13 February)
- Term 3: 17 April – 19 June 2027 (excluding 22 May)
There will be a short sharing for invited family and friends in the final weeks of Term 3. The sharing will aim to be during class time, and students will find our more about this at the time.

Agnes Allan Bursary
Agnes Allan was a teacher, passionate about inclusion, and this bursary scheme exists to offer support to students to participate in the performing or production arts.
The Agnes Allan Bursary provides some support to students who may require financial assistance to take part in a short course in drama, music, production or screen.
Anyone who wishes to take part in our Short Courses and faces a financial barrier can apply for bursary support to help meet the cost of tuition fees.
James McAvoy Drama Scholarships
BAFTA-winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy is committed to nurturing the creative potential of young Scots who experience barriers to access and participate in drama at RCS Short Courses.
James is a graduate of the BA Acting programme at RCS and Patron of the Junior Conservatoire of Drama. The Glasgow-born actor has funded the new James McAvoy Drama Scholarships to enable young people to experience the world-class drama training at RCS as he did.
The scholarship aims to support applicants who would otherwise find meeting the cost of tuition fees at RCS a barrier to accessing pre-Higher Education drama training at the Royal Conservatoire.
